All You Need to Know about Roses

Posted:19 October 2014

We recently enjoyed another truly inspirational and sunny day at The Garden House – our All You Need to Know About Roses workshop was lead by Simon White of Peter Beales Roses in Norfolk, winner of numerous gold medals at both Chelsea and Hampton Court Flower Shows.

Simon began the day with an introduction, which was followed with a demonstration of the best pruning techniques for roses in containers; he also discussed which roses were suitable for those of us with small gardens.  One of which, Rosa de Rescht, Simon then planted for us.  This rose grows to just 60cm so is perfect for the border – it has fuschia-red flowers with tints of purple, fading to magenta-pink.

Simon demonstrated how to prune both shrub and hybrid tea roses and set about our beautiful Charles de Mills which sadly was suffering from mildew due to its overcrowded stems.  Simon’s confidence and smart pruning is something we all hope to be able to achieve in our own gardens!

He also pruned our lovely Dorothy Perkins rose, which is climbing over an arch and it looked brilliant after his handy work.

After a delicious lunch eaten al fresco (wonderful to eat outside on a sunny September day!), Simon completed the workshop with an illustrated talk on the A-Z of Roses where his passion and knowledge just shone through!

Simon will be returning to the Garden House on Saturday 14th March 2015 with a talk entitled Hands-on Approach to Pruning your Roses, and will include a discussion on Climbers and Ramblers for every situation.
