Gardens of the Past: 1300 – 1800

Medieval Pottagers to Regency Flower Gardens.  This fascinating and informative course is led by Dr. Lucy Cotes; garden designer, lecturer and garden historian.

In six individual sessions Lucy will consider the gardens of the past from monastic medieval gardens to the landscape gardens of the gentry.

Looking at slides and old plans, pondering on the delights and details of individual gardens conjuring up the people of the past or picking up ideas to use in our own gardens.

  • 14th -15th century: Medieval Gardens: the age of symbolism and the church
  • 16th Century: The gardens of the Italian Renaissance reflected in the gardens and paintings of Europe and England
  • 16th century: The gardens of the Tudors – royalty to peasants
  • 17th century: The age of the French – Versailles and its influence on English Gardens
  • Early 18th century: William and Mary’s Garden – the Dutch Influence
  • Mid to late 18th century: The Age of the English Garden; moving away from formality to embrace nature

Lucy Cotes is an experienced professional garden designer. Born in London she did an Honours degree in Botany at Imperial College London and a research doctorate in Agriculture in Scotland where she worked for the Horticultural Research Council. Lucky enough to have grown up in a Lutyen’s designed garden followed by a Hillier designed one she has soaked up the magic of plants. Her love and knowledge of plants led her into Garden Design and after doing a course at the School of Garden Design in London she set up her own Garden Design business in 1991.

Cost: £290 (six afternoon sessions) – to include delicious afternoon tea and cakes.

Monday afternoon sessions 4, 11, 18 April, then 9, 16, 23 May 2011.  1.30pm to 4.30pm.
