Starts Wednesday 6 April 2011
***** This event has now finished *****
Make the best of your allotment or vegetable garden – especially designed for the first time gardener, our 6-session course covers everything you need to know to get you started with confidence.
The hands-on sessions will take you through all the stages of seasonal cycles, the naming of plants, knowing your soil, seed sowing and planting (“right plant, right place”).
If you have or are interested managing an allotment, we’ll cover crop rotation, types of vegetables, container growing, what grows best in chalk (the typical Brighton soil), and best of all – harvesting!
We’ll also look at pruning, managing climbing plants, weed control, pests and diseases, and propagation.
The course will be lead by The Garden House’s own Bridgette Saunders, an experienced horticulturalist, planstwoman and lecturer. Bridgette is also the author of Allotment Gardening (ISBN: 9781847970220/Oct 09); her book deals with all aspects of the allotment ‘experience’.
NOTE: There are two time slots each day - sign up for EITHER the morning course 10am to 1pm, OR the evening course 6.15pm to 9.15pm. Each course will include a session working on a local allotment.
Cost: £125 (one day a week for six weeks) – and includes refreshments! Places are limited so do contact us as soon as possible.
Dates: Wednesdays 6, 13, 27 April, then a one week break, resuming 4, 11, 18 May 2011
Location: The Garden House, 5 Warleigh Road, Brighton BN1 4NT
