Make your own Clay Oven

Saturday 14 April 2012

***** This event has now finished *****

SORRY, THIS EVENT IS NOW FULL…!  Love outdoor cooking? After completing this hands-on workshop you’ll have the confidence to build a clay oven in which to bake bread and pizzas, roasts and stews.

The workshop is run by Sally Francis who has completed a MSc in sustainable building.  She is based in Brighton and runs EcoRefab which specializes in decorating with non-toxic paints, and building with natural materials.

You’ll learn how to:

  • design and build a foundation and base for your oven
  • assemble the materials required to build your oven
  • source and test your earth for the right clay content
  • build your oven through to the first firing
  • produce a set of oven tools

On the day we’ll:

  • finish an oven base
  • lay the hearth bricks
  • make the sand mould
  • build the oven dome itself

During the workshop we’ll look at the wider context of building with earth, and an information pack will be provided covering what we’ve learnt, and including opportunities and links  for those who want to learn more.  Wear clothes you don’t mind getting muddy in!

Cost: £80 – to include a delicious homemade lunch and a glass of wine.  This is a day-time event, starting at 10.30am and finishing at approx. 3.30pm. Spaces are limited so do book early!

Location: The Garden House, 5 Warleigh Road, Brighton BN1 4NT
