Plant Passion: 8-session course

Starts Thursday 28 September 2017

***** This event has now finished *****

Are you a keen gardener or professional horticulturalist wanting to increase your plant knowledge and skills – or maybe you attended one of our earlier Plantsmanship courses but still want to know more?

This 8-session course is ideal for all plant enthusiasts – the aim being to further your knowledge of plants, and how and where they grow.

The course will cover the following:

  • Enjoy a hands-on session on botany unlocking some of the mystery of how plants work
  • Look closely at the propagation and care of tender perennials (including Dahlias and Pelargoniums) and conservatory plants
  • Design with plants* – we will spend one morning in a garden and nursery specialising in herbaceous perennials and grasses, focusing on ‘dream partnerships’
  • Focus on climbing and wall plants – both perennial and annual, and which are the best for clothing walls, fences, obelisks, arbors and arches
  • Look at edible plants; plus how to grow interesting vegetables, integrating them into ‘flower beds’
  • Preparation for spring – choosing bulbs for the garden with the opportunity to join a ‘group order’ from a well known bulb wholesaler
  • Plant up different seasonal containers, for this winter, and next spring – when we’ll create a ‘lasagne’ of bulbs!
  • Plant identification every week, each plant’s origin, family, how it grows and thrives, and its place in our gardens.

Each person will complete a project of their choice: researching a person who has influenced the world of horticulture, or a project linking growing with food and drink.   Plus each person will be able to create a timeline for 5 plants, either existing or wished for in his/her garden.

“In terms of the content of the course and style of delivery – it suited me perfectly, everything I anticipated was covered, and I especially liked the practical parts, plant ID, and little exercises like finding plants that went together. The happy outcome for me is that it’s definitely made a difference to my approach.  I’ve still been going to the garden centre to have a look – but not buying – and have been researching plants more online.  I’ve started to plant up my empty raised bed according to the plan I made, sown nicotiana seeds in the greenhouse and ordered some plants.” Jane P

We also have a wealth of resources to use here in the garden, as well as the Garden House library.

This course will run Thursday mornings from 10am -1pm, and be taught in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere with plenty of time for questions and for students to develop their own interests.

Cost:  £335 – to include refreshments each week, and entry to the garden for Design with Plants* morning
