RHS Workshop: Gardening with Early Years Children
Tuesday 24 April 2012
***** This event has now finished *****
Learning outside the classroom is integral to teaching in both primary schools and nursery settings. The introduction of a garden area gives children a wealth of opportunities which contribute to their personal and social development as well as increasing their knowledge of the natural world. This day will introduce you to ways of involving the children in the process of setting up and developing a garden, age appropriate gardening skills and activities for the whole year. This day is suitable for absolute beginners with no experience of gardening or those who want to learn further skills.
Objectives
- To look at the practical issues which should be addressed when introducing a garden to an Early Years outdoor area, including Health & Safety.
- To consider the specific needs of the under 6s and how a garden can be used to meet these needs.
- To be inspired to try out a range of practical gardening activities and learn about successful crops to grow with young gardeners
Key stages targeted: This particular course is aimed at early Years
Foundation Stage Curriculum Links - The Foundation Stage curriculum guidance has an explicit expectation that good quality learning experiences should be provided outdoors as well as indoors. An Early Years garden can facilitate this is many ways. For example:-
Physical development
- Handle tools, objects and construction material safely and with increasing control
Language and literacy
- Sustain attentive listening, responding to what they have heard by relevant actions.
Knowledge and understanding of the world
- How plants grow, caring for our environment, where food comes from.
