What's On

Make a Round Willow Basket

Monday 2nd November

We have invited back basket maker Christiane Gunzi to lead this one-day workshop.  Her first workshop here was so enjoyable and productive for everyone who took part.

On this workshop you will learn how to make a traditional round willow basket, suitable for bread or fruit.  You’ll use natural Somerset willow to create the base, construct and weave the sides, and add a simple track border. Learn about the traditional British weaves, including pairing, waling and randing, about traditional basketry tools and about this lovely natural material.

This class is suitable for basketry beginners who have some general ‘crafting’ experience. Willow weaving improvers are also welcome. Please note that basketry does require a certain amount of manual dexterity.

Christiane will bring a few baskets to show you, plus different willows and books to look at during the day.

Christiane lives and works in Sussex, and has been weaving willow and rush baskets since 2008.  She has been running basket-weaving classes for beginners for several years, and demonstrates the craft at Great Dixter Garden each summer.  Christiane exhibited at the London Garden Museum’s 2019 Christmas fair, Beautiful & Useful.  She is a member of The Basketmakers’ Association, and is Trade Advisor to The Worshipful Company of Basketmakers.

Cost: £130 – includes all the materials, the use of tools, refreshments (tea/coffee, vegetarian lunch)
