Autumn at Great Dixter

Posted:23 October 2015

Having visited the splendid Great Dixter a few weekends ago I was once again reminded of the magic of this extraordinary place. There really is nowhere quite like it its spirit, originality, boldness and creativity shine through.

It was also the weekend of Dixter’s specialist nursery fair, so to make our visit even more special there was the added bonus of meeting wonderful plantsmen and women who own or represent some of the best nurseries in the UK and Europe. All so passionate and knowledgeable, just talking to them was inspiring.

When Christopher Lloyd died in 2006 the Great Dixter Charitable Trust was set up to oversee the running of the estate. Christopher would have been proud of what head gardener Fergus Garret and the Trust team have done to keep Dixter away from the usual additions of fancy restaurants and gift shops nothing seems overworked, nothing is pretentious, everyone seems very welcome – it really is all about the plants.

And best of all when we arrive back at The Garden House I’m inspired to love and appreciate my ‘not always perfect’ garden even more like Great Dixter, for me my own garden has a little bit of magic too!
