See in the New Year at the inspiring Anglesey Abbey Gardens

Posted:31 December 2013

As winter slowly turns to spring no plant lover should miss the chance to visit the glorious winter display at Anglesey Abbey.  Situated not far from Cambridge this National Trust property and gardens boasts one of the most beautiful and varied winter gardens you could wish to see.

Join us on Wednesday 19 February for an early spring visit.  The cost will be £38 each (NT members £32), and we will leave The Garden House in Brighton by coach at 9am, and return at approx. 6pm. Refreshments on the coach will be provided, and you can take your own lunch, or visit the excellent restaurant in the gardens.

The Abbeys winter garden path wends its way for almost a quarter of a mile though the most spectacular skeletal plant forms, with splashes of colour created by groups of dogwood, willow and whitewashed bramble. Scent is provided by winter flowering shrubs including Viburnum, Mahonia, Sarcococca and Chimonanthus.

For stunning shrubs and trees, nothing can beat their display of dogwood (Cornus) – reds, greens and yellows – and the glade of Himalayan Birch (Betula utilis ‘jacquemontii’) which, with their ghostly white bark and statuesque structure, makes all who come across them pause and reflect.

Many different types of bulb and ground cover plants give added colour and interest, but Anglesey Abbey is particularly renowned for its amazing snowdrop displays.  The garden boasts over 200 varieties of Galanthus, some labelled and therefore identifiable along the main path, and many others in gentle drifts that meander through the woodlands and other areas – enough to satisfy any keen Galanthophile!

There is even a delightful shop to buy your snowdrops-in-the-green and many other gardening goodies!  So do join us for this wonderful day visit – and please get in touch soon as places always go quickly!
