The Garden House Tasks for September
Posted:31 August 2025
Please bear in mind these tasks are not a comprehensive look at all garden aspects, but relate directly to our monthly work in the Garden House garden, inspiring and teaching the volunteers, students and Friday group gardeners who get stuck in and support the development of this unique Brighton garden.
- Look out for self sown annuals and transplant or pot up
- Plant biennials
- Collect seeds from perennials and annuals
- Divide and replant perennials
- Sow hardy annuals
- Prune climbing/rambling roses once they’ve finished flowering.
- Continue to feed tomato plants until all the fruits have finished growing and ripening.
- Sow spring onions, Swiss chard, Winter spinach, broad beans, hardy peas, radishes and shallots (shallots at end of month)
- Cut back and feed chives, lovage and sorrel
- Pot up strawberry runners
- Clean out your greenhouse to reduce the risk of pests and diseases overwintering. Remove shading
- Start to reduce frequency of house plant watering
- Give evergreen hedges a final cut
- Collect tree and shrub seeds for sowing next spring
- Look out for honey fungus and powdery mildew
And finally, continue looking at bulb catalogues and planning your spring displays. Ideally you want to plant most spring-flowering bulbs in September/October. Bulbs used to create indoor Christmas displays, such as Hyacinth or Narcissi Paperwhites, can be planted now and kept in the cool and dark until they start shooting up. Tulips can be planted next month or later, or even in early spring (if your soil allows).
