Film Screening: ‘Tasting My Future’

Posted:21 March 2016

We feel privileged and excited to be supporting this wonderful film made by GH friend Cathy Maxwell, and her colleague Sylvie Collier.

The film ‘Tasting My Future’ traces the progress of a group of women refugees for whom the language of food has brought unity, friendship and a way forward. Cathy says: “in a nutshell, we wanted the stories to be heard, and we wanted to make a difference, especially in the current climate of negativity towards refugees. The women come from Iraq, Egypt, Turkey, Kurdistan, Syria and Ethiopia, and all live here in Brighton now”.

…Reem survived a Baghdad bomb that killed her friends and nearly severed her arm. Diala fled bombs that smashed her neighbours’ homes in Syria. Zainab hid in African forest. Women from Iraq, Syria, Ethiopia, Kurdistan, Turkey and Egypt escaped war, conflict, and persecution in their countries. They seek refuge in the UK to re-build shattered lives. Some live on their nerves, awaiting decisions on asylum. In exile, they share one tradition: cooking. Food is the pulse that drives this film. It’s how women cross cultural boundaries to cook and share traditional dishes. They celebrate together with an exuberant party…

(For many years Sylvie Collier made documentaries for BBC and other channels, while Cathy Maxwell worked in education with minority ethnic communities before moving into film-making, specialising in education and migration).
