We are delighted to invite the inspirational artist Hilary Simon to the Garden House for a two-day workshop teaching the French technique of ‘Painting on Silk’ using gum resist ‘gutta’ and vibrant translucent dyes. The results are gorgeous!
Following an introduction to the materials, artist and expert tutor Hilary will demonstrate painting on silk with the gum resist ‘gutta’ and then using steam-fix dyes to dye the silk. Other techniques include using salt, layering, alcohol, plus different ways of applying the dyes and gum resist.
Over the two days you will have the time to learn the techniques, experiment and then design and paint a silk square for yourself to take home. With inspiration from the flowers in the ‘high summer’ garden and other natural forms, you will start with a drawing on paper that is then transferred to silk.
All abilities are welcome. The colours flow onto the silk smoothly and paintings evolve like magic – it is easy to grasp the technique, is very rewarding, and results are immediate!
Day 1: Demonstration by Hilary, with participants practising and making samples on small frames
Day 2: Design a silk square, 38 cms x 38 cms – a perfect size for framing, hanging, or ready to fix and hem for a cushion or a pocket square, or for another decorative use.
This workshop will give all information to be able to continue at home.
